Living Room Painters in Darlington

The sequence in any living room is ceiling first, then walls, then woodwork. Ceiling drips onto finished walls are one of the most common causes of rework — we follow this order on every job.

Walls in Darlington’s older properties vary considerably. Period plaster in Haughton le Skerne and Cockerton is often in sound condition but carries multiple layers of old paint, needing sanding back at edges and filling at cracks before the first coat is applied.

Modern plasterboard in West Park and Newton Aycliffe requires a sealing coat before emulsion. We apply the sealing coat as a standard step on all new plaster and plasterboard — without it, the porous surface absorbs the first coat unevenly.

Bay windows create alcoves either side of the main bay projection. Paint quality in these areas is immediately noticeable on entry to the room — each junction between soffit, angled wall, and deep original windowsill needs hand-cutting.

Chimney breast walls can carry staining from years of use, particularly where the fireplace was used for solid fuel. We check for staining and apply a stain-blocking primer where required — this prevents old marks bleeding through the new finish.

Feature walls work well in living rooms when the colour is chosen correctly and the surface is prepared to a high standard. Imperfections show more clearly on a dark or saturated feature colour — we sand, fill, and prime more thoroughly on any surface receiving a feature colour.
