Exterior Painters in Darlington

Exterior painting on a 1930s semi-detached house in Darlington by Darlington Decorators

Darlington Decorators are exterior painters in Darlington, covering period and modern properties across the town.

What we cover:

  • Full outdoor house repaints: the complete exterior from walls to woodwork
  • Masonry walls — brick, render, and stone facades
  • Windows and woodwork — sash frames, fascias, soffits, and doors
  • Front doors and outbuildings
  • Fences and garden walls

We’ve worked on Victorian brick terraces in Cockerton, rendered semis in Harrowgate Hill, and detached homes in Hurworth-on-Tees. We know which coatings work on exposed North East facades, which renders need crack-filling first, and how to get a finish that holds through the seasons.

Exterior Painting Services

We cover all exterior surfaces across Darlington’s varied housing stock, from Victorian terraces to modern detached homes.

Masonry Painting

Rendered semis on Bishopton Lane in Harrowgate Hill develop hairline cracks as seasons change. Brick terraces on North Road need a breathable masonry approach that lets moisture cycle through rather than seal behind the surface. We inspect the full elevation, fill cracks with flexible filler, treat biological growth, prime, and apply two coats of breathable exterior masonry finish. See our masonry painting page for the full preparation and product detail.

Window Frame Painting

Timber windows on Darlington’s Victorian and Edwardian properties are original joinery. Bay window frames on North Road and sash windows in Cockerton have been in place for over a century. We strip back to sound timber, prime with oil-based primer, and apply two coats of durable exterior gloss or satin. See our window frame painting page for timber prep and finish options.

Wood Painting

Exterior timber beyond windows includes fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and original timber cladding. Fascias on older properties have absorbed years of moisture and need cleaning, sanding, and priming before any finish coat. Period townhouses in Hurworth-on-Tees and Yarm often carry heritage-grade timber requiring longer drying windows between coats. See our wood painting page for exterior timber scope.

Front Door Painting

A front door sets the character of a period property in Darlington. Victorian panel doors on Gladstone Street and hardwood entrance doors on Mowden’s detached homes both need sanding back to sound paint, filling, priming, and two coats of durable exterior finish. See our front door painting page for panel door and solid door detail.

Door Painting

Beyond front doors, garage doors, side gates, and porch entrance doors all take exterior weathering across Darlington’s North East climate. We treat each surface with the same preparation sequence: clean, sand, prime, and two finish coats. See our door painting page for the full range of exterior door types we cover.

Deck Painting

Composite and timber decking in Darlington gardens takes heavy foot traffic and year-round weather exposure. Correct preparation and a deck-specific coating extend the life significantly and improve slip resistance. See our deck painting page for surface preparation and coating options.

Fence Painting

Timber fencing around Darlington properties weathers quickly without treatment. Pressure-washing, allowing to dry fully, and applying a quality fence paint or stain extends life and improves the look of the whole garden. See our fence painting page for treatment and colour options.

Shed Painting

Garden sheds and outbuildings in Mowden and Hurworth-on-Tees are often left until the house exterior is complete. A freshly painted property with a neglected outbuilding reads as unfinished. We include sheds and outbuildings in exterior project quotes and apply the same preparation standard as the main house. See our shed painting page for outbuilding scope and product choice.

Garage Door Painting

Garage doors take the same North East weathering as the rest of the property exterior. Timber and metal garage doors both need correct preparation — stripped back to sound material, primed, and finished with two coats of exterior-grade paint that handles temperature change and damp. See our garage door painting page for surface types and finish options.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Assessment

We inspect every external surface at the quotation visit. We note render condition, biological growth, timber deterioration, and any structural repairs needed before painting starts.

2. Surface Preparation

Render is cleaned of biological growth with mould treatment and allowed to dwell. Cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler. Timber is stripped back to sound material. Cast iron is cleaned and treated for rust where needed.

3. Priming

Bare masonry gets masonry primer. Bare timber gets oil-based timber primer. Any rust on cast iron gets rust-inhibiting primer. Priming is not optional and is never skipped in our process.

4. Paint Application

Exterior paint needs a dry window during application and cure time. We monitor forecasts and plan application phases around them. Two finish coats are standard. Exposed elevations on Harrowgate Hill and Newton Aycliffe sometimes get a third coat based on surface condition.

5. Inspection and Sign-Off

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are completed before we leave. We walk the property with you and address anything before closing the job.

Exterior Painting Costs in Darlington

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01325 796601 for a precise quote.

Exterior painting in Darlington typically costs between £1,400 and £5,500 depending on property size, surface condition, and scope.

Three things drive the price:

  • Surface area and height. A detached home in Hurworth-on-Tees has considerably more wall area than a North Road terrace. Height also matters. Access equipment on two-storey rendered elevations adds time and, on some properties, cost.
  • Surface condition. Render with hairline cracks needs filling before painting. Harrowgate Hill semis that have not been painted in several years often need more crack repair than newer properties elsewhere. Timber in poor condition needs stripping. These steps take time and are priced into the quote.
  • Coating choice. Standard exterior masonry paint is the most economical option. Breathable flexible masonry finishes for exposed elevations cost more per litre and are applied differently. The extended service life justifies the difference on North East-facing rendered walls.

Trade insight. Rendered semis on Bishopton Lane and surrounding Harrowgate Hill streets typically need crack filling as a standard preparation step, not an optional extra. Budget for this in any rendered exterior quote. Skipping it shortens the life of the finish significantly.

Typical ranges:

  • Victorian terrace (North Road or Haughton le Skerne, walls and woodwork): £1,400 to £1,900 for the exterior, including front door.
  • 1930s rendered semi (Harrowgate Hill or Mowden, walls, fascias, and soffits): £1,800 to £2,700. Full exterior repaint including fascias and soffits.
  • Detached (Hurworth-on-Tees or Yarm, full exterior with all woodwork): £3,200 to £5,500 depending on size and paint system.
