  • Handrails and newel posts finished in durable eggshell or gloss
  • Stair risers, stair side boards, and understairs area
  • Stripping and priming where varnish has been overcoated
  • Victorian and Edwardian turned balusters our speciality

Victorian terraces in Cockerton have original turned-spindle banisters with multiple profiles that accumulate paint layers over decades. A careful strip and build-up is the right approach rather than adding another layer.

Staircase Painting Services in Darlington

Balusters and Spindles

Spindles and balusters are the most time-intensive component of any staircase painting project. Each turned or flat spindle has multiple faces, recesses, and profiles that require hand-cutting on every pass. Rushing produces drips, pooling at the bases, and uneven coverage on the turned sections.

Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Cockerton and North Road properties often have original turned timber balusters carrying multiple layers of old paint. We strip the build-up from recesses where it has obscured the original profile, preserving the character of the staircase. Modern estates in West Park and Middleton St George use flat or square-section spindles — faster to work on, and we price accordingly.

Handrail and Newel Post

The handrail and newel post receive more physical contact than any other part of the staircase and need a harder, more durable finish than the spindles or risers. We specify an eggshell or hard gloss finish on handrails and newel posts for this reason.

Greasy residue from years of hand contact does not accept paint without thorough degreasing. We clean all contact surfaces with a specialist degreaser before sanding and priming — skipping this step leads to adhesion failure on the highest-contact area of the staircase. Original hardwood handrails in Yarm and Hurworth-on-Tees period properties are sometimes stripped back to bare wood and finished with a clear oil or varnish.

Stair Risers and Treads

Stair risers are the vertical faces between each tread. In period properties these are often painted timber; in modern builds they may be MDF. The preparation requirements differ between timber and MDF, and we address each accordingly.

We paint risers and stair side boards as part of the staircase project and integrate the work with the hallway painting. The sequence matters — risers and stair side boards are painted before the hallway walls are finished, which allows any splashes to be touched up without damaging a completed staircase.

Understairs Area

The understairs cupboard and the underside of the staircase soffit are often overlooked in staircase projects. A freshly painted staircase with an unpainted or poorly finished understairs area is immediately noticeable.

We include the understairs ceiling and walls in the staircase project as standard unless the client specifies otherwise. The space is usually small with low headroom and awkward angles — we work these areas carefully with smaller tools. Where the understairs area houses a boiler or services, we paint every accessible surface and advise at the site visit if any areas are not reachable.

Victorian and Edwardian Staircases

Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Cockerton, North Road, and Haughton Road are built to a quality rarely found in modern construction — individually turned balusters, solid timber handrails, and deep stair side boards with clean lines.

The most common problem is the accumulation of paint over varnish over paint, obscuring the original profile and providing poor adhesion. We assess the layer build-up at the site visit and recommend stripping where required. This is part of the same scope as any wider interior painting project and restores the original character of the fitting.

Wood Finishing and Clear Coats

Not every staircase needs painting. Original hardwood balusters and handrails in period properties are sometimes better served by stripping back to bare timber and applying a clear oil or varnish. We advise on the appropriate finish during the site visit, based on the timber species and condition.

Where clients want a natural wood finish alongside painted risers and side boards, we carry out both elements in a single visit. For wider wood painting and finishing work across the property, see our dedicated service page.

How Our Staircase Painting Works

1. Site Visit

We inspect the staircase type, assess existing paint conditions, check for varnish layers, and confirm the scope. No charge for the visit.

2. Preparation

Spindles, handrail, and stair side boards are degreased, sanded, and primed. Where old varnish is present, we strip back to a sound base before priming.

3. Priming

A specialist primer is applied to all bare or exposed timber surfaces. On MDF risers, we apply an MDF primer to prevent end-grain absorption.

4. Finish Coats

Two coats of the chosen finish are applied to each element in sequence. Spindles are painted individually and each coat is allowed to dry before the next.

5. Walkthrough

We check every spindle, the handrail, risers, and stair side boards for clean lines and full coverage, then walk through the completed staircase with you.

Staircase Painting Costs in Darlington

Prices below are estimates only. Every staircase is different. Call 01325 796601 for a precise quote.

Modern Semi Staircase

A modern semi-detached staircase in West Park or Middleton St George — flat spindles, single flight — typically costs £450 to £650. This covers spindles, handrail, risers, and stair side boards.

Flat square-section spindles are faster to work on than turned Victorian balusters and we price accordingly. Preparation is the same sequence: degrease, sand, prime, two finish coats.

Victorian Terrace Staircase

A Victorian terrace staircase in Cockerton with turned balusters and original joinery typically costs £450 to £700. This includes strip where required, prime, and two finish coats on all elements.

The price reflects the additional time per spindle on ornate turned balusters and the preparation work on built-up paint layers. A staircase with 30 ornate turned balusters costs more than one with 20 flat spindles of the same height.

Period Townhouse Staircase

A period townhouse staircase in Yarm High Street or Hurworth-on-Tees with ornate balusters and a half-landing typically costs £850 to £1,300. This covers full strip, prime, and finish on all original turned balusters.

Three things drive the final price: spindle type and count, preparation required, and staircase complexity. Condition is assessed at the site visit — call 01325 796601 to arrange a fixed quote.
