Ceiling Painters in Darlington

Ceiling painting in Darlington by Darlington Decorators, modern cylindrical ceiling finish

Darlington Decorators are ceiling painters covering the town and surrounding County Durham villages.

  • Smooth plaster and plasterboard ceilings
  • Cornicing and ceiling roses cut by hand
  • Water stain blocking before finish coats
  • Artex overpainting on suitable surfaces
  • High ceilings using correct staging equipment

Victorian terraces in Cockerton and North Road have high ceilings with original ornamental coving. We cut coving by hand — masking tape alone will not produce a clean line on plaster mouldings.

Smooth Ceiling Painting

A flat, even ceiling finish depends on correct preparation before the first coat goes on. In Mowden’s 1930s and 1940s detached homes, original plaster ceilings are often in reasonable condition — light sanding, a good-quality primer, and two coats of ceiling white produces a clean result.

In West Park properties from the 1970s and 1980s, plasterboard ceilings are more common. Plasterboard joints need taping, filling, and a sealing coat before finish coats are applied — skipping the sealing coat causes the finish to absorb unevenly, leaving visible patches in certain light.

We use staging rather than step ladders for ceilings above 2.7 metres to maintain safety and cutting accuracy. Rooms in Hurworth-on-Tees and Yarm period properties sometimes exceed 3 metres.

Artex Removal and Overskimming

Artex became common across Darlington’s post-war and 1970s housing stock. Many homeowners in Harrowgate Hill and West Park want a smooth ceiling without the disruption of full removal. Overskimming by a plasterer followed by two coats of ceiling finish is the most efficient route to a flat result.

Where overskimming is not practical, careful overpainting with a suitable textured-surface primer and ceiling paint can reduce the visual impact of the texture. We do not carry out the plastering work ourselves — we work alongside recommended local plasterers and advise on sequencing so the ceiling is decorated immediately after the plaster has cured fully.

Cornicing and Ceiling Roses

Cockerton Green and North Road terraces have some of the finest original plasterwork in Darlington. Cornices with dentil moulding, egg-and-dart profiles, and deep projecting coves are common in these Victorian and Edwardian properties.

We cut cornicing by hand on every pass. Masking tape applied to plaster mouldings frequently lifts sections of paint when removed — this is especially common where previous layers have not fully bonded. Ceiling roses in period dining rooms and hallways on Coniscliffe Road and Mowden’s Woodland Road require the same attention, working carefully around the rose profile rather than cutting straight across it.

Water Damage and Staining

Water staining from old leaks is one of the most common ceiling problems we encounter across Darlington’s housing stock. Painting over a water stain with ceiling white almost always results in the stain bleeding through the finish within weeks — a shellac-based or oil-based stain blocker is the correct step before any water-based finish coat.

We identify the stain type before recommending a blocking product. Brown water stains and yellow nicotine stains respond differently to different blocking primers. In Newton Aycliffe properties where plasterboard ceilings are common, water ingress from above sometimes softens the board itself — where the board has been compromised, we advise on replacement before decoration.

High Ceilings

North Road Victorian terraces and period properties in Polam and Pierremont regularly have ceiling heights between 3.0 and 3.5 metres. These rooms require staging boards rather than ladders to reach the ceiling safely and maintain accurate cutting-in along the cornice line.

We cover all floor areas and furniture more extensively when working overhead at height, and we price staging time into every quote. High ceilings in Yarm’s period townhouses are often paired with detailed cornicing — both factors are assessed during the site visit.

For hallways with high ceilings leading onto a staircase, our hallway painting service covers access planning in narrow spaces. For a full-home repaint, see our interior painting service.

How Ceiling Painting Works

1. Site Visit

We inspect the ceiling, identify surface type, check for Artex, staining, or damaged plasterwork, and assess ceiling height before quoting.

2. Written Quote

You receive a fixed-price quote covering preparation, sealing coat where needed, and finish coats. No additions later.

3. Preparation

We fill cracks, seal plasterboard joints, apply stain blocker where needed, and prepare the surface correctly for the finish coat.

4. Painting

We apply primer and finish coats in the right sequence. Cornicing and ceiling roses are cut by hand at every pass.

5. Completion Check

We inspect the ceiling under strong side lighting before leaving. Any missed areas or cut lines are touched up on the day.

Ceiling Painting Costs in Darlington

Prices below are estimates only. Every ceiling is different. Call 01325 796601 for a precise quote.

Ceiling Height

Rooms above 2.7 metres require staging equipment and additional setup time. North Road terraces and Yarm townhouses regularly reach this height or above, and staging is priced into the initial quote from the start.

Period Detail

Cornicing, coving, ceiling roses, and dentil moulding all require hand-cutting at every pass. These features significantly increase time per ceiling compared to a plain modern room and are assessed during the site visit.

Surface Condition

Artex, water staining, cracked plaster, or damaged plasterboard require preparation work before any finish coat. A Cockerton Victorian terrace ceiling with coving typically ranges from £180 to £280. A high ceiling with cornicing in a Yarm period townhouse runs from £280 to £450.
